Allweather Shelters Managing Director, Ross Abbey, joined the family business in 1978 after playing 123 games for the Western Bulldogs (or Footscray as they were known then). Ever since he was 10 years old Ross knew he wanted to play footy for the Bulldogs.
Like most footy players in those times Ross was studying for a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, studying at Monash in 1971 and then continuing at the University of Melbourne. In 1975 he joined the accounting firm Irish Young and Outhwaite and subsequently completed the demanding professional year required to become a Chartered Accountant. Ross finally stopped playing football for the Bulldogs in 1981. However he’s still very active within the club and is currently assisting in getting former players getting involved and reconnected with the Club.
Ross’s father Angus Abbey, after he played 78 games for Footscray during its golden era between 1949 and 1954 when the club won the ‘54 Premiership, started the business in 1973.
Allweather Shelters specialise in building high quality roofing systems for a multiplicity of domestic and commercial applications. The company’s team of experienced administrators and installers pride themselves in advising, designing and building structures on time and on budget.
The staff (both full and part time) each shares an average of 29 years service.
The family business has changed a lot over the years explained Ross. “More than 25% of our work now requires building planning permits from Council.”
With an increasing focus on outdoor living, business is still growing and he is currently involved with the computerisation of erection techniques for installers.
