Sam LawSam LawContact: Sharynn Moors
Sharynn Moors began working in a milk bar when she was 12. Whilst she always knew that she wanted to be successful, she wasn’t sure what direction that success would take.
Sharynn’s working life began, as a secretary, with the Conzinc Riotinto Group, in the Legal Department of Hamersley Iron. She was highly impressed by the brilliant mind of the young lawyer for whom she worked, but never considered herself clever enough to study or practice law. Sharynn worked with the CRA Group for eight years, before deciding that she needed a complete change. She chose nursing, but 20 months into the course, realised that it was not for her. So she remarried, had three children and, during her homemaker years, undertook lots of short courses.
One day, Sharynn met a dressmaker, which reminded her of her teenage passion for sewing. This prompted her to return to full-time fashion studies. Sharynn enrolled at Box Hill TAFE and took to the course like a fish to water. Several years later, armed with two Diplomas, Sharynn entered the world of fashion. She worked successfully in that industry, for five years, loving every minute of the experience. But Sharynn knew that something was missing….
At that time in her life, Sharynn’s eldest daughter had decided that she wanted to study medicine at Monash University. So mother and daughter went to the Monash Open Day, to find out about the course. Whilst there, Sharynn thought it might be a good idea to visit the Faculty of Law. After speaking with the admissions officer, Sharynn suddenly knew what was missing – it was time to get her Degree!
After applying under the Special Entry Scheme, Sharynn, sat the Law School Admission Test, and six weeks later, learnt that she had passed. After an interview in late 2001, Sharynn was accepted into the course. Five years later (the last two years full time), she was awarded her LLB, with Honours. Sharynn started working as a lawyer, with a focus on Family Law. She bought her Fitzroy practice in March 2010 and, on 2 June 2015, she and her staff opened the door to their shiny new offices, at 3 Queensberry Place North Melbourne. Sharynn loves what she does.
Some years ago, the family downsized into a four bedroom apartment, overlooking the sea. Now that, all but one of her three daughters have left home, we asked Sharynn what she plans to do with the four bedrooms. Her reply: set up a sewing and dressmaking room!
