George Paras is the founder and guiding light of Steptoe’s Renovation Supplies. In 25 short years George has created a remarkable business that has become one of Australia’s largest suppliers of original and manufactured period style renovation supplies and antique building materials.
Arriving as a European immigrant with very poor English language skills he went to school in Australia to improve his English. With no qualifications George saw a niche opportunity to learn and embrace the extraordinary woodworking skills of the early Victorian era. He started painstakingly gathering original antique period pieces of timber and metal, which he rescued from the demolition of old churches, houses and public buildings and stored them in a small rental property in Rokeby Street, Collingwood.
George and his son have now taken over most of Rokeby Street, filled it with a huge range of antique building materials, purchased and restored 100 year old woodworking machines, researched and learnt the original carpentry skills and trained a passionate and dedicated team of highly skilled tradespeople.
Along with the extraordinary array of double hung, circular and casement windows and doors of all shapes and sizes, George has a huge stock of 100 year-old recycled Oregon timber beams which are machined down to manufacture identical to original hand designed windows, doors, entries, French door units and by-fold doors. For outdoor applications some Oregon gates are heat treated to 280°C to take out any possible fungus growth and extend their life expectancy by an additional 50 years.
Recognised and respected by the National Trust, preferred supplier of windows and doors to Parliament House and the ‘one stop place to go’ for Australia’s high end antique renovators, George’s friends, family and workers recently presented him with a framed photograph of recycled Oregon windows and doors and the four simple words: Ask George – He Knows!
